Memorial day weekend

at vashon senior center

Vashon Senior Center resides in a historic building that began its life as the Vashon Memorial Library in 1946. Behind the Library, the Bacchus family built King County’s first World War II Memorial in honor of sons Thomas and Lad, who were both killed near the end of the war.
The Senior Center has been welcoming island elders and their families here since 1984, when we purchased the building from King County (for $1).

Over Memorial Day Weekend we celebrated our past, present and future with two meaningful events:

Sunday’s Formal Rededication of the World War II Memorial

was a meaningful tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country, in particular two young Island men from the Bacchus family. Our thanks to Alex Bruell of Vashon Beachcomber for the photos below: members of the Bacchus family fluff the wreath and Brigadier General Joe Ulatoski shares a poem. Photos below are by Alex Bruell of Vashon Beachcomber, and here’s a link to photos from Wade Yip:

Monday’s Community Cook-Out

was great fun for all ages, thanks to a delicious hot dog and chili bar courtesy of the Senior Center cooks and Island Lumber’s grill, plus perfect picnic music from Riverbend.
